Overview
Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment, deoxycholic acid, that destroys fat cells to get rid of the “double chin”. Often this area is stubborn and will not go away despite diet and exercise. This may be more prominent due to aging or your genetics. Kybella is a prescription medicine and is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin. The active ingredient in Kybella is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells and once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin and no further treatments are needed once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.
What to Expect
At each treatment, you will receive a series of very small injections under your chin. The injection process takes about 15 to 20 minutes in the office. The exact number of treatments you will need depends on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile. We recommend a minimum of two sessions with four weeks between each treatment. Kybella is an excellent option for patients that are looking to avoid surgery and avoid any downtime required for recovery. Kybella has been used off-label in other parts of the body where small areas of stubborn fat will not go away despite diet and exercise. Kybella is only FDA approved for use under the chin, but the physicians at Detroit Plastic Surgery can discuss other treatment areas with you.
The injection process is simple. We map out the area of excess fat beneath the chin. This area is confirmed with the patient and an injection plan is made. We use a topical anesthetic to numb the injection site to minimize any pain you may have during the treatment. Then a series of tiny needle injections, barely visible by the naked eye, are selectively placed into the fat under the chin. After the treatment, you may experience mild bruising, swelling or numbness. This is usually temporary and your results will appear within 3-4 weeks. Call us today to schedule your appointment!
