What are chemical peels?

The chemical peels offered at RTH are a new generation of medical-grade acids and peeling agents that rejuvenate the skin, improve tone and texture and reduce the appearance of aging, scarring, skin discoloration and other unwanted blemishes. The powerful formulas diminish wrinkles and lines, correct discoloration issues and greatly improve the overall health and appearance of the skin. Many peels are formulated to reintroduce essential vitamins back into the skin and intensely hydrate and moisturize.

Chemical peels come in a range of strengths, and certain peels are more effective at correcting specific skin issues. With a variety of chemical peels to choose from, our professional cosmetic technicians can help you select the peel treatment that is right for your skin type and desired results.

Step 1 Consultation

A thorough consultation is an important first step when deciding if a chemical peel is the right option for you. We thoroughly discuss your desired results and provide an honest, professional opinion on how best to achieve those results. We also make certain that you are a good candidate for the treatment, taking into account your skin type, age, health, medical background and other factors that could affect the safety and effectiveness of your treatment. All of our consultations are conducted with the goal of making sure our patients feel comfortable, confident and informed about chemical peels.

Step 2 Preparation

One week prior to your treatment, avoid sun exposure, electrolysis, waxing and depilatory creams. Two to three days prior and one week after treatment, discontinue Retin-A, Differin, alpha/beta hydroxyl acids and benzyl peroxide. The day of your treatment, please remove all makeup and lotion before you arrive. Men should avoid shaving the day of treatment.

Step 3 Treatment

Before your treatment, we will answer any questions that may have come up since your consultation. Every effort is made to make certain that all of your concerns are addressed and you are as comfortable as possible.

During treatment, a chemical solution is gently applied to the skin, causing it to peel and allowing new skin to surface. How long a treatment takes and the sensation felt during treatment depends on the strength of the peel.

Step 4 Recovery

Recovery time is dependent on the type of peel. Some peels have hardly any recovery time, while others require a week or more of downtime for proper healing. The recovery process and any after-care instructions will be explained at your consultation.

Step 5 Results

Results do vary, but most people report seeing a great improvement in texture, tone and clarity. Skin is more radiant and often tighter, creating a youthful appearance. During your consultation, we will thoroughly explain what results to expect. We also can customize a skin care product regimen that will help to enhance and sustain your results.

Q: Is a chemical peel right for me?

If you want to improve your skin’s texture and tone, reduce superficial lines, reduce scarring and correct skin discoloration while achieving a natural and healthy glow, a chemical peel may be the right option for you.

Q: Why choose RTH Plastic Surgery for my chemical peel treatment?

When choosing a cosmetic professional for your chemical peel treatment, there are three important qualifications to consider: training, experience and personal attention. Your cosmetic technician should be overseen by a plastic surgeon who has completed an accredited plastic surgery residency program and is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Above all, your cosmetic professional should be someone you trust to deliver exceptional results and perform a safe and effective treatment.

At RTH, our cosmetic technicians are chemical peel specialists with years of experience performing these treatments. We spend the necessary time with every patient to answer any questions and address any concerns. We make it a priority to ensure our patients are well-informed and completely comfortable with their decisions. We know that your time is valuable, which is why we maintain an efficient treatment calendar and use the latest techniques and products to minimize your downtime and maximize your results.

Q: Will my insurance cover a chemical peel?

Insurance companies commonly do not cover an elective or cosmetic treatment like a chemical peel unless it is performed to correct a medical or health condition. If you plan to use insurance as payment, we strongly suggest consulting with your provider to discuss if the treatment is covered in part or in full by your current plan.

Q: Will my chemical peel results look natural?

A chemical peel is a minimally invasive technique, providing treatment without the need for any surgical procedure, thus eliminating the possibility of scarring or other signs that a treatment was performed. During your consultation, we will thoroughly explain what results to expect.

Q: Can I have additional treatments in combination with my chemical peel to enhance results?

Yes, your RTH doctor can recommend additional services that may enhance your desired results, which can include laser skin resurfacing, dermal fillers or broadband light therapy.
